She made an impact on X Factor USA due to her feisty opinions and arguments with her boss Simon Cowell.
However, despite being a determined mentor on the talent TV show, Demi Lovato admits perhaps she should have waited to accept such a high-profile job following a difficult few years.
The 20-year-old singer spent time in treatment in 2011 for bulimia and self-harming, which she has openly spoken about in a bid to help others.

She was offered the job to join Simon, LA Reid and Britney Spears on the X Factor USA panel in autumn 2012 and jumped at the chance.
Speaking to the new Spring term issue of Cosmo On Campus, Demi concedes she wasn't ready for the role.
She said: 'I don’t think I was ready when I started on The X Factor. In an ideal situation I would have maybe waited a year or more.

'I dived into work really quickly and maybe that wasn’t the best idea at the time, but the place I am in today is so much better than I could have ever imagined, so I’m really glad.'
After conquering her demons, the Camp Rock star is now in healthier state of mind and admits she's finally ready to start dating again.
She explained: 'It is very unhealthy when girls devote all of their time to a guy and forget their friends and family. I did that. I was always looking for distractions because I was so afraid of being alone.
'I have spent the last year focusing on myself and it’s been incredible. More has come out of the past year than in my entire career so far, and I truly believe it was because I was taking care of myself and not focusing on guys.'

In the past, the young star admitted she used to 'self-sabotage' her romantic relationships.
However, now she insists: 'I’m in a place where I can finally trust and love and be a better person for the man I am in a relationship with, instead of being a clingy girlfriend or getting jealous.'

Intervju med TEEN

While promoting her partnership with Acuvue’s 1-Day contest, we caught up with the one and only… Demi Lovato! Obviously, we got her to spill on her newest project — alongside other celebrity mentors Tyler Blackburn, Meaghan Martin and Joe Jonas — but that’s not all. We got the scoop on her recent performance with Nick Jonas, her X Factor gig, and her feelings on Glee and PLL. Yeah, we think you’re gonna like this Q&A. Just a bit.

Teen: What was the Acuvue 1-Day mentorship experience like?

Demi: It was really cool. I got to work with somebody and help them follow their dream and bring them out of their shell, try to get them to feel more confident in who they are. It was really great to be able to do that for somebody because I really wish I had somebody to do that for me when I was younger. It was really great and Acuvue is an incredible brand to work with. They’re really super sweet and have the best contacts on the planet. I’ve been wearing their contacts for years now and they’re the best.

Teen: It seemed really awesome how you got to show her behind stage. Do you wish you could do that with all of your fans at some point?

Demi: Yeah, I wish I could. I think my all fans would be a little impossible, but I could help give tips and things like that. Confidence is key. [My fans are] insane. That’s in a good way. They have my back no matter what.

Teen: We interviewed Tyler Blackburn about Acuvue, too. Are you a Pretty Little Liars fan?

Demi: I’ve never seen it, but I’ve read the first two books. I’m the type of person who doesn’t want to start a show in the middle of the first season because I feel like I need to know all the background and all the history and stuff like that. So, I haven’t seen it. I really want to! I think I’m going to download all the seasons on iTunes and just watch them within two weeks or something.

Teen: Speaking of TV, we heard that your music is going to be on Glee!

Demi: You know, I actually don’t know about that. If I am, that would be a complete honor. It’s really cool. You know you have a popular song when it’s on Glee. It’s awesome.

Teen: Let’s talk about your style. It seems like you’ve been wearing the bun a lot.

Demi: Yeah, I’m just taking risks, trying out new things and trying to keep it fun and fresh. It’s always fun to experiment with different hair colors. I change my style and my looks so much. I get so bored easily. I’m just playing around right now.

Teen: Do you find that you do the top knot a lot because it’s convenient or do you just like that a lot?

Demi: I don’t really wear it that often. I’m just kidding I’m wearing it right now. It’s really easy to me to have your hair up, especially in the summer time. It’s hot out. When you have long hair, it can get really tangly and it’s just really messy and a lot to deal with, so I like to keep it up as much as possible and I like the top knot. I think it’s fun and it’s trendy right now.

Teen: We saw your video with Nick Jonas performing at The Greek! How did that come about?

Demi: It was really great. I reconnected with him recently and you know we had such a special friendship and he’s just an incredible friend. There’s nobody like him in my life that I felt connected to through music. We work really great together. Sometimes I feel like he’s the male version of me, which is pretty funny, but, like, not crazy. Yeah, we just have a really great friendship, so when he came to my concert we hadn’t seen each other in a really long time and I was like, “Hey I know we haven’t seen each other in a while, but if you want I think it would be really fun for us to go out on stage together just like old times.” And he was like, “For sure!” It was really cool.

Teen: So what is happening with The X Factor?

Demi: You will actually see it on September 12. That’s the premiere date for the season and I think it’s going to be really awesome. The layout is different, so it’s unlike any other reality show singing competition on TV right now. It’s also young and fresh and a lot more exciting.

Teen: Are you nervous at all?

Demi: Of course I’m nervous! I had such a great time and I’m also really confident in how the show was going in auditions and stuff like that. I don’t feel like I need to be nervous, but of course you are when you have a new project coming out.

Från DOLLY MAGAZINE

Q: YOU’VE BEEN TOURING IN THE U.S, ANY PLANS TO COME DOWN UNDER FOR SOME SHOWS?

A: “There are no definite plans, but I’d love to come down to Australia!”

Q: TELL US ABOUT WORKING ON THE X FACTOR USA. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE ONE DOING THE JUDGING?

A: “I’m having fun for sure, but it’s a big responsibility. Some auditions are good and some are bad, but it takes a lot of guts for someone to come out on that stage in front of the judges and the audience. You have to appreciate that. But some people just don’t have ‘it’, that x X-factor we’re looking for, and you need that to make it in this business. You have to tell them, it’s not fair otherwise”.

Q: WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING WITH BRITNEY SPEARS? ARE YOU A FAN?

A: “It’s amazing, I’ve been such a huge fan of Britney all along, It’s an honour to work with such an icon of pop music. Not only is she sweet, as everybody knows, but she’s also incredibly funny, which I think will surprise some people”.

Q: YOU’RE VIEWED AS A ROLE MODEL BY GIRLS, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE YOU’RE SO OPEN ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS. HOW DOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?

A: “There were not many people out there discussing the issues I was dealing with and I felt like there was a stigma around it. I’m glad I get to shine a light on issues that a lot of teens, and also adults, deal with every day, but a lot of people are scared to talk about”.

Q: IT WAS ALL AROUND THE NEWS THAT YOU WERE IN REHAB FOR SELF-HARMING AND AN EATING DISORDER. WERE YOU EXPECTING THE ATTENTION?

A: “At first I didn’t want anyone to know about it, but then I realised they were going to find out anyway so (I thought) I might as well be honest. Once I started to open up I saw that I could help people by talking about my issues and it really helped the healing process”.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO READERS WITH A FRIEND WHO HAS AN EATING DISORDER OR ANOTHER MENTAL ISSUE? WHAT’S THE BEST THING THEY CAN DO TO HELP?

A: “They should just be there for the person and be a good friend”.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE GIRLS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH THEIR OWN BODY IMAGE ISSUES?

A: “You have to speak out, you have to let someone know what you’re dealing with. Talking about it is so important”.

Q: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR BODY? IS IT DIFFICULT TO STAY CONFIDENT IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

A: “I feel good but I have to work at it. It’s not easy. You have to remind yourself that there’s not one type of beautiful”.

Q: NOW THAT YOUR LITTLE SIS IS IN THE SPOTLIGHT, WHAT ADVICE HAVE YOU GIVEN HER?

A: “I just try to be a good role model and set an example for her”.

Q: WHAT SHE SHOULD LEARN FROM YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES?

A: “I want her to be confident in her own skin and to know how amazing she is”.

Q: WAS IT SCARY LEAVING REHAB? WERE YOU WORRIED ABOUT YOUR FANS NOT WELCOMING YOU BACK?

A: “It was very scary leaving treatmen; I had no idea if I’d still have a career. But it didn’t take long to realise my fans were with me, and they had been all long. Every day I was in there working on myself they were writing ‘stay strong’ on their wrists to show they supported me. I got the phrase tattoed on my own wrist to thank them for sticking by me”.

Q: WE HEAR YOU HAVE NINE TATTOOS. WHAT DO THEY SYMBOLISE?

A: “They have different meanings to me. I love them, but I’m taking a break for a while”.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR BEING CONFIDENT AROUND GUYS?

A: “You have to love yourself first. Confidence comes from that”.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A RELATIONSHIP?

A: “They have to be funny, without a doubt. I love to joke around costantly, so a sense of humour is so important to me”.

Q: WHAT DO YOU GET UP TO WHEN YOU HAVE SPARE TIME?

A: “I watch TV with family and friends. I love crime shows. I go out to dinner with my friends. Sometimes it’s just nice to hang out with them without having to ‘do’ anything”.

Right now my fave..

- Food is.. “I’m crazy about juices at the moment, like from a real juice press. They taste so good and they’re great for you”.

- Person to follow on twitter is.. “@/TheXFactorUSA - obviously!”.

- Item of clothing in my wardrobe is.. “I’m loving jean shorts with studs and anything neon”.

- Movie is.. “I don’t have one favourite movie, but I watched Jackass 3,5 last night and almost died from laughing so hard”.

- City is.. “Dallas because that’s where I’m from”.

- Book is.. “The Hunger Games or anything about aliens. I’m reading a book called Area 51 right now, it’s so crazy!”.

Cosmopolitan artikel

Outspoken. Brutally honest. Undeniably fearless. If Demi isn't already one of your favorite pop stars, she will be after you read this.
Casually leaning back in a booth at a trendy New York City Restaurant, Demi Lovato is trying to sum up the past 18 months of her life. "So much has happened, and I'm really glad it's over." she says, running a hand through her long hair. "It's been tough, but I'm really excited to be in a more healthy, positive place." Of course she's referring to her stay at a treatment center at the end of 2010, where she sought help for an eating disorder and where she was diagnosed as being bipolar.
While that stuff is pretty heavy, what's fearless about the 19 year old is that she's been completely honest about it from the get-go. Rather than go the route of so many celebs-- who either claim they're suffering from exhaustion or release generic statements thought up by their PR team-- Demi has been upfront about everything. That same openness bring rare authenticity to her songs, which are packed with emotional lyrics that resonate with her fans. Her most recent album Unbroken debuted in the Top 5 on the Billboard charts, and she is currently on tour promoting it. Then, this September, she'll join Britney Spears, L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell as a judge on on Fox's popular show The X Factor. In the realm of Hollywood, where so much seems manufactured and fake, Demi has managed keep both her personal and professional lives so real. "I'm very independent." she says, "and I have a very close relationship with my fans and I am always honest with them."
PAGEANT GIRL TURNED POP STAR
Raised in Dallas by her mother and stepfather, Demi always knew she wanted to be a performer. "I sang in my first talent show at 5 and was hooked," she says. Her mom, a former a former country singer, was totally supportive of Demi's dream and helped her start auditioning. In between trying out for roles, Demi participated in beauty pageants but is very insistent that they weren't like the crazy ones on TLC. "I didn't get a fake tan or wear extensions. I liked it because I could perform during the talent section." she says. It was during one of those pageants that 7 year old Demi and her mom heard that the show Barney and Friends was holding a casting call in town. They decided to check it out, and she landed a role. Demi appeared on two seasons before her family moved to Los Angeles so she could pursue acting and sing more seriously. "I started auditioning for commercials and television roles. Then around the age of 14, I tested for Hannah Montana," she says. "I wound up not getting it, but that's how Disney learned about me. I kept reading for things, and I got a role in the Disney TV movie Camp Rock, co-starring with The Jonas Brothers, and the lead in Sonny With a Chance." Tiffany Thornton, who costarred on Sonny With a Chance, says everyone liked Demi from the start. "The first time the cast met, she was so bubbly and very lovable," says Tiffany. "She has this energy that draws people to her." For the next three years, Demi worked nonstop filming her show, making two records, and touring. But being a major teen sensation wasn't always easy. "No one ever pressured me at Disney but I did feel pressure being with the channel." she says. "They didn't have everyone sign contracts saying we'd wear purity rings but I think it was expected that we wouldn't get into trouble." Demi, who was already dealing with some secret issues, felt hemmed in and frustrated.
PROVING SHE'S UNBREAKABLE
The popstar admits that during most of her disney years, she suffered from anorexia and bullimia. "Around 12, I started getting bullied and was called fat. Soon after that, I lost like 30 pounds," she says. "When I got a little older, I started throwing up." Demi also began cutting herself and has admitted to partying quite a bit. It all came to a head at the end of 2010, when people close to Demi held an intervention of sorts. "My family expected me to fight them on going to treatment," she says. "They were going to call the cops if I refused, but I went willingly." Demi checked into the treatment center thinking she was there to deal with her eating disorder and self-harm issues, but after being evaluated, she learned she also suffered from bipolar disorder. "I felt relieved when I found out," she says, leaning forward. "Like, I'm not completely crazy, there's a medical reason for all of it."
She spent three months in treatment and now says she will be in recovery forever. "It's a daily thing; you don't get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help," Demi says. "which is hard for me to learn because I really like doing everything on my own." As for going public with her problems, Demi never considered not being truthful. "Hiding it wouldn't have been good for me or my fans, so I chose to talk about it." she says. After she finished treatment, Demi took a few months off before pouring herself into her music. She says it felt great to get back into the studio and thinks the experience made her rethink the purpose of her career. "It's not just about singing anymore," she says. "I want to inspire people." Clearly, she has. When Demi released Unbroken, there was an outpouring of support. Fans and critics applauded her frank lyrics in song like "Skyscraper," where she sings "Go on and try to tear my down/I will be rising from the ground, like a skyscraper." Demi's music hits such a nerve, women regularly tweet her empowering lyrics have helped them deal with their own issues. Fellow pop star Kelly Clarkson thinks that authenticity is what makes Demi special. "She is exactly the same on and off stage. There are no surprises with her." Kelly says.  Eventually, Demi wants to get back into acting, but for now, she's content with focusing on her music. "When I combine the two, I get overworked and that's not fun. So for the next year, it's all about singing. Other than that, I have no plans. I just want to see where my career takes me."
NOW IT'S TIME FOR LOVE
Unlike her career path, Demi knows the direction she'd like her personal life to go in. "I want to be married with kids in 10 years," she says with a grin. So what is she looking for in a future hubby? "Just a guy who makes me laugh," she says. "Obviously, I have to be attracted to him, but a sense of humor really does it for me." That's pretty much where Demi's dating qualifications end. "I don't have many deal breakers. I've done so much in my life, it doesn't feel right to judge other people. Oh, I know one quality I won't tolerate," she says. "I would never be with a guy who is controlling."  The star does admit that it's been a little intimidating to date since getting out of treatment. "It doesn't really bother me that a guy will know about my past before we even go out," she says. "What's more embarrassing is that his mom will already know my life."
As we finish, Demi says she has a flight back to L.A. to catch. But she has one more thing to say about her career before she goes: "I'm making that transition into being more adult," How does she plan to do it? She raises her eyebrows and says "I'll probably start dressing sexier." We're all for that.

Glamour intervju

Glamour: These pictures from the shoot are gorgeous. I love your new look. What is beautiful to you?
Demi Lovato: Having strength and confidence in yourself. I think that women who know who they are are beautiful.
Glamour: And do you feel like you’re there? Or are you still working on that?
DL: I feel like I’m there. I feel beautiful, you know? I feel strong, and I feel confident in who I am.
Glamour: What’s your go-to makeup?
DL: Concealer, foundation, blush, mascara. I can feel glamorous without makeup too, especially on my lips. They’re naturally reddish, so I often let them go.
Glamour: How has your look changed in the last year?
DL: Whenever you’re going through, you know, stuff, it definitely reflects in the way you wear your makeup and hair. Wearing less makeup is more comfortable for me.
Glamour: What’s one thing that has really stuck with you from your experience in treatment?
DL: I met so many young girls and even older women who had literally, you know, been through so much that I couldn’t even imagine. I was maybe a little more closed-minded, and I learned from them never to judge anyone.
Glamour: Is it true that you got tattoos on top of your cutting scars?
DL: I think scars are like battle wounds—beautiful, in a way. They show what you’ve been through and how strong you are for coming out of it. My tattoos say “Stay strong.” “Stay” on one [wrist] and “strong” on the other. Now I’m able to look at them and be thankful for being alive. I think that I’ve been blessed over the past year to be able to start over.
Glamour: What’s the healthiest thing that you do for yourself every day?
DL: Pray. I pray every night before I go to sleep and every morning when I wake up.
Glamour: I want to ask you about some of your lyrics. In “For the Love of a Daughter,” you sing about the “family war” and say, “Your selfish hands always expecting more.” Is this experience about your childhood?
DL: I think people read way too much into that line.
Glamour: What do you mean by that? Do people think it’s abuse and it’s not?
DL: I just don’t think people need to be that literal. I think that could just be, like, a financial thing.
Glamour: In “Skyscraper,” you sing, “Go on and try to tear me down, I will be rising from the ground.” Who are you singing to?
DL: It’s to every person who tried to bring me down. Everyone has the bully or the mean girl or the ex-boyfriend who tried to bring them down. For me, I think of the people who really weren’t there for me when I went into treatment. It was a really dark time for me because I had only a few people—I had surrounded myself with so many artificial friendships. It’s about those people too.
Glamour: You also sing, “You never really can fix a heart.” Do you believe that?
DL: I think every time you get your heart broken, there’s a little piece of it that chips away, and I don’t think you ever get that piece back. But I think you’re able to bandage it with time and with new people and other things that make you happy.
Glamour: So what kind of guy makes you happy? What would you say you’re looking for in a boyfriend?
DL: Someone who’s not only supportive in my career but also in my [emotional] recovery. It’s a big responsibility dating me. Because I come with a little bit of baggage, you know? I’m completely open. I’m honest about the journey I’ve been on, so I definitely don’t take dating lightly anymore. And they have to make me laugh!
